Places on offer for the MdS by Facing Africa
These places are available for 2010 and 2011. Please note that you should contact Facing Africa directly with regard to these places, and this text is provided by them.
For those who have not been able to secure a place in the Marathon des Sables through your own country representative, Facing Africa secures a number of places each year on the MdS with the aim of raising funds through the efforts of those who apply.
In order to apply for one of our places, you will need to send us your detailed proposal for fund-raising on behalf of Facing Africa. With so few places available, we have to be selective and look at realistic proposals based on past experience and ideas for fund-raising. Your proposal should be sent together with a brief profile indicating your age, profession, contact details (phone and postal address and any information about yourself that will assist us in selecting the best applicants. Your proposal must list the ways you intend raising money for Facing Africa as well as projecting an amount you would hope to achieve over the next 12 months
The cost of registering is the same as registering through Best of Morocco Ltd, but in addition to the normal registration fee payable to them, you will have to pay an additional £1,000 premium (non-refundable) to Facing Africa at the time of registration. After we have offered and confirmed your place, you should then set in motion your plans for raising donations for Facing Africa. When you have generated a minimum of £5,000 in donations, excluding gift-aid, we will refund the £1,000 premium. If, therefore, you are confident that you can generate at least £5,000 in donations, then the cost is identical to registering in the normal way through Best of Morocco Ltd.
Facing Africa does not extend its offer to refund 50% of money raised (that is available to those with a non-Facing Africa provided place and who raise a minimum amount of money for Facing Africa) to any of the appplicants chosen for one of these places.
Once we have received your £1,000 premium, we will inform Best of Morocco Ltd (the UK representative, operators of this website) and they will invoice you for the initial deposit (£500) and the following instalments due.
As a Facing Africa team member, you will take part in the MdS both as an individual and also as a team member. We will send you copies of our leaflet, posters and a DVD with images of the work we carry out in Africa which you can use for your own promotion, press releases, web site, fund- raising and sponsorship. We will also be pleased to give you any help you may need in your fund-raising efforts.
Facing Africa is not involved in the organisation of the MdS nor the registration formalities. You will be required to deal directly with Best of Morocco Ltd. They will send you all the necessary registration forms to complete as well as invoicing you for the normal registration fees as per their web site. In the event that you have to cancel at any stage, we will not refund any of the donations you have generated (this should be made very clear to your sponsors and donors) nor your £1,000 premium which cannot be transferred to another year or any other person.
Travel to Morocco: Please note that all travel arrangements to and from Morocco are made by Best of Morocco Ltd. However, Facing Africa competitors will NOT be travelling to and from Morocco on the charter flight provided for other competitors. Separate flights from Gatwick or Heathrow will be booked and full details will be forwarded to you from Best of Morocco once they have been finalised.
